Interested in being part of SODA but haven't got a group near you?
If you haven't got a group near you, you could become a lone member for a membership subscription of £8 per year. You will receive the SODA magazine 3 times a year, keeping you up-to-date with what the groups and other lone members have been doing. You are also invited to send in photos of your own artwork and reports of your recent activities to the magazine. You can also submit to SODA exhibitions, whether national or regional. If you are near enough to a group for occasional travel, you would also be welcome to join them for art demonstrations and outings or holidays.
The lone member scheme isn't just for those who haven't got a local SODA group: if you are housebound or unable to attend local group meetings, you are equally able to benefit from all SODA has to offer and we hope by being a lone member you will feel connected to the national organisation. At the Society for Disabled Artists, we know that it is all too easy for disabled people to feel isolated and, as such, we work hard to prevent our lone members from feeling side-lined from the organisation just because they aren't part of a SODA group. Our lone members are an active and important part of our charity, as well as one of the things that makes us stand out from other disabled art charities, and we encourage lone members to take part in any way that you are able.

spotlight on a lone member
"I was never interested in art at school but later in life, after the children had flown the nest, I began to think it's something I might like to try. I joined a local art group and then a few years later was asked if I would be interested helping out at a SODA group which I did for a few years and enjoyed. At the moment I'm a lone member as there is no group in my area. I keep in touch with SODA through the magazine and attend the Anglia Region art holiday each year. I paint mostly in watercolour but love to try other mediums and at the moment I'm doing some collage work and really enjoying the effect using old books, magazines and sheet music with acrylic paint."

Why not become more involved in SODA? In addition to submitting photos and articles to the magazine and artwork to regional and national exhibitions, you can now also submit photos of your artwork to our online gallery. To do so, fill out the form on the Contact Us page or email us at societyfordisabledartists@gmail.com.
The magazine is also starting a new feature of showcasing individual lone members, an example of which is shown above, interviewing them about their love of art and the impact SODA has had on them. Why not get in touch and participate? It wouldn’t require much of your time – just details of your experience of SODA and why you decided to become a lone member & what it is that you love about art and being an artist, as well as photographs of your artwork if possible. If this is something you would be happy to get involved in, please get in touch through the Contact Us page or by contacting SODA's Editor, Imogen Kravtschuk, using the contact details in the back of the SODA magazine or listed in the members' section found here.
